Gloucester closed in on a European Challenge Cup quarter-final spot, scoring six tries to beat Agen.

Gloucester thrashed the French side 61-16 in October and a similar score looked possible when Henry Purdy crossed twice in the first 12 minutes.

Callum Braley and Jason Woodward sealed a bonus point before half-time.

Agen rallied with three second-half tries but Mark Atkinson and Ed Slater touched down to send Gloucester above Pau to the top of Pool Three.

However, Pau will return to the summit if they maintain their 100% record by beating bottom club Zebre on Saturday.

The Cherry and Whites host the French club on 19 January to decide which team will top the group, although it would take an unlikely sequence of results for the losers of that contest not to go through to the quarter-finals as one of the three best pool runners-up.
